What to see in Gustavia

Gustavia is the capital city of San Bartolomé (also known as Saint Bart). He received his name in honor of King Gustavo III of Sweden, a country that during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries administered the island.

The island of San Bartolomé, ancient Spanish possession, was claimed and occupied by France in 1648. Signed to Sweden in exchange for commercial rights in Gothenburg in 1784, the Scandinavian kingdom founded it to administer the Swedish company of the Western Indies. Prospera during the Napoleonic wars, the company's assets descended after 1815, so the island was sold to France in 1878.

Gustavia's site was originally called Le Carénage, since it worked as a place for the repair of damaged ships, a task known as Carena. In the middle of the s. XVII three forts were built to protect the port: Oscar (previously Gustav Adolf), Karl and Gustav. According to the company's documents, the name Gustavia was first used between December 28, 1786 and February 9, 1787 as a tribute to the King of Sweden: Gustavo III. The Anglican Church of San Bartolomé, located in front of the port, was built in 1855.
